- The Coton de Tulear is a member of the Bichon family.
- The Bichons are descended from the ancient Europena breed called the Barbet.
- The father of all Bichons: the Barbet was introduced in the Canary Island by the Spanish and from its origins came the Coton de Tulear, the Maltese, the French Petit Lion Dog, the Italian Bolognese and the Havanese.
